Nostro Accounts
What is a Nostro Account?
A Nostro account is:
A bank’s account maintained in another foreign bank in another country and currency.

- Foreign currency transactions
- SWIFT payments
- Trade finance
- Cross-border settlements
Without Nostro accounts:
- Banks cannot directly handle foreign currency transactions efficiently

- ICICI opens a USD account in Citibank USA
Then:
- The USD account maintained by ICICI in Citibank USA is called a Nostro Account

- Corporate Account → Belongs to a company
- Nostro Account → Belongs to a bank itself in another foreign bank
Real-Life Flow Example
Suppose Mohan sends:
- $1000 from India to USA
The Indian bank:
- uses its USD Nostro account in USA
- to transfer and settle the payment
This helps:
- smooth international fund movement
- faster foreign currency settlement

“Nostro” means:
“Our account with you”
From the bank’s perspective.
Example:
- ICICI says to Citibank USA:
- “Our USD account with you”
That becomes:
- ICICI’s Nostro account

Regular customers usually do not directly interact with Nostro accounts.
